The Sweet Pea rubs elbows the the Harley D.

Arriving at Spray at 7pm

Spray wilderness and Spray libation

Stephanie Edman, bike fitter and ambassador of Sweet Pea Bicycles, and Tori Bortman of Gracie’s Wrench have colluded with me to make this Wheeler/Grant County tour happen.

A bit north of Mitchell, OR

Before we started off from Mitchell, we ran into the Scenic Bikeway Committee who was checking out a proposed bikeway. Awesome to see the familiar faces of Alex Phillips, Jerry Norquist, and Kristin Dahl.

They were hard at work creating cycling infrastructure for Oregon. I got such a great pic of five fabulous bike mavens together and erased it in my flurry to capture the canyons snaking around the John Day River.

The landscape out here has absolutely no geologic modesty.  The molten forms, flaking flat-topped structures, dripped-sand castle-like rock outcroppings, and carved canyons unabashedly tell an ancient story of creation and re-creation.   On the splotches of grassy plains, I easily imagined dinosaurs jaunting about munching on foliage.

On the way to the John Day River

The ride today was nothing less than spectacular.  Joe has nothing to worry about, but my infatuation with Oregon and all her diversity just turned up a notch or two.
